School of Graduate Studies
Brief on the School of Graduate Studies of BTU
The School of Graduate Studies at Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) represents a significant milestone in the institution’s academic evolution. Originally established as Polytechnic in 1999 under PNDC Law 321 (1992), BTU began operations in September 2003. The institution achieved a transformative elevation to full university status in April 2020 through the Technical Universities Amendment Act 2020 (Act 1016).
This advancement enabled the introduction of postgraduate education. In February 2024, BTU celebrated a historic achievement by admitting its first cohort of postgraduate students for the 2023/2024 academic year. The inaugural graduate programmes include Master of Science degrees in Animal Science, Crop Science, Farm Power and Machinery Engineering, Irrigation and Drainage Engineering, Postharvest Engineering, and Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management. These programmes specifically address developmental needs in the Upper East Region while contributing to national progress.
The Graduate School reinforces BTU’s vision to become a center of excellence in technical and vocational education and training. The university plans a progressive expansion of postgraduate offerings across all departments, with doctoral programmes planned to commence in the School of Agriculture. This expansion will enhance research capacity and provide advanced study opportunities throughout the region and beyond.
